GASTRIN IS SECRETED BY G CELLS IN THE GASTRIC MUCOSA.   IT STIMULATES THE PRODUCTION OF HYDROCHLORIC ACID AND PEPSIN WHEN FOOD ENTERS THE STOMACH.  GASTRIN ALSO EHANCES GASTRIC MOTILITY BY INCREASING SMOOTH MUSCLE ACTIVITY. IT IS UNIQUE AMONG HORMONES DUE TO THE FACT IT PRODUCES ITS EFFECT ON THE ORGAN THAT PRODUCES IT.

GHRELIN IS PRODUCED PRIMARILY BY THE EPITHELIAL CELLS IN THE FUNDUS OF THE STOMACH.  THE PITUITARY, HYPOTHALAMUS,  KIDNEY AND PLACENTA ALSO PRODUCED SMALL AMOUNTS.  GHRELIN HAS TWO MAJOR EFFECTS AND A NUMBER OF LESSER EFFECTS:

GHRELIN IS A POTENT STIMULATOR OF GROWTH HORMONE SECRETION.  iT WORKS WITH BOTH GROWTH HORMONE RELEASING HORMONE AND SOMATOSTATIN TO CONTROL WHEN AND HOW MUCH GROWTH HORMONE WILL BE SECRETED.

GRHELIN PLAYS A ROLE IN COMMUNCATING THE BODY"S ENERGY BALANCE TO THE HYPOTHALAMUS.  IT ALSO MAY SUPPRESS FAT UTILIZATION IN THE ADIPOSE TISSUES.

GHRELIN ALSO STIMULATES GASTRIC EMPTYING.

GHRELIN ALSO STIMLATES CARDIOVASCULAR FUNCTION.   INVESTIGATORS HAVE NOT CONCLUDED WHETHER THIS IS A DIRECT OR INDIRECT EFFECT.
