MOST EXPERTS CONSIDER THE PINEAL GLAND TO BE AN ENDOCRINE GLAND.  THEY ARE NOT CLEAR AS TO WHAT ITS FUNCTION IS.

IT PRODUCES MELATONIN, WHICH MAY BE LINKED TO THE ONSET OF PUBERTY.  IT APPEARS TO DO THIS BY INHIBITNG GONADOTROPIN RELEASING HORMONE SECRETION.

MELATONIN MAY ALSO INFLUENCE A VARIETY OF BODY RHYTHMS SUCH AS SLEEP-WAKE CYCLES.  RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT LIGHT EXPOSURE DECREASES PRODUCTION OF MELATONIN, WHILE DARK EXPOSURE INCREASES ITS PRODUCTION.

IT ALSO PRODUCES ARGININE VASOTOCIN, A SUBSTANCE THAT MAY INHIBIT GONADOTROPIN RELEASING HORMONE SECRETION.
